The “Empty the Shelters” event began in 2016 as an attempt to encourage more families to adopt a pet in their homes. Nearly 68,000 pets have found homes for adoption through this discounted adoption event. Since its inception, the Bissell Pet Foundation has expanded its “empty shelters” to include organizations in 45 states and Canada, in partnership with 443 animal welfare organizations.

“Shelters are overcrowded and in dire need of support due to slowing adoption rates and increasing pets’ longevity,” said Cathy Bissell, founder of the Bissell Pet Foundation. “With so many people looking to add pets to their families at this time of year, the Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope event is the perfect opportunity to make a difference in your community by saving lives and creating a space to give another homeless person a chance to pet.”
