A video clip shows a lion in Karachi Zoo looking visibly weak

The Karachi Urban Company said on Tuesday that all the animals at the Karachi Zoo in Pakistan are being properly fed after disturbing images of an visibly weakened lion surfaced on the internet. According to Geo TV, food supplies at the zoo were suspended on Monday, with the supplier claiming it had not been paid in months.

“The management has not paid since February 2021,” said contractor Amjad Mahboub.

He added that the issue with Karachi municipal authorities has been resolved and food supplies have been replenished. Mahboob added that authorities assured him that his dues would be paid by December. The zoo is under the administrative control of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC).

He drew attention to the matter after journalist Quatrina Hosain published a disturbing video of a lion in the zoo. In the video, the lion appears sleepy, sitting inside its cage. “Karachi Zoo has not paid its food suppliers…the animals are already in poor condition,” she wrote while sharing the video on Monday.

The images sparked outrage and were shared hundreds of times on social media, with many calling for strict action against zoo authorities. However, KMC spokesperson Ali Hassan Sajid told local news channel Dawn that the images circulating on social media are outdated and used to spread propaganda against the zoo.

He added that the park has enough food stocks for a week, even if food supplies are stopped.

The director of the Karachi Zoo, Khalid Hashmi, also shared a statement denying the reports and describing them as “upholstery“Or fabricated. There is no shortage of food supplies and all animals are fed according to routine as he invited people to visit the zoo and see the animals for themselves,” Mr. Hashemi said.

His video of the Karachi Zoo’s animals was noticeably missing the lion that Mrs. Hussain had tweeted about. This was indicated by the journalist and activist in the field of animal welfare in a tweet that responded to the statement of the director of the zoo.

Karachi Zoo is the largest zoo in Pakistan and the second oldest zoo in the country after Lahore Zoo.
