Kolkata’s Alipore Zoo introduces short-term adoption of animals

Adoption fees have been reduced, and authorities are encouraging people to adopt less popular birds and animals, along with popular birds and animals such as deer, tigers and chimpanzees, zoo director Asis Samanta said.

Alipore Zoological Garden in Kolkata has introduced month-long animal adoptions to raise public awareness of them, along with the previous year’s period.

After adoption, although the animals continue to remain at the zoo, the sponsor receives a free pass into the building for up to four people, can celebrate his or her birthday on campus, and receive an adoption card.

Zoo director Asis Samanta said on Tuesday adoption fees have been reduced, and authorities are encouraging people to adopt less popular birds and animals, along with popular birds and animals such as deer, tigers and chimpanzees.

“We encourage people to adopt less popular animals such as pangolins, hunting cats and birds of various kinds for a month to make adoption accessible to the common man and spread the practice. People can also adopt animals for a year as before PTI.

The annual adoption rate of a lion, tiger or elephant is Rs 2 lakh, while the annual adoption rate of a giraffe is Rs 1.5 lakh. One needs to pay $15,000-20,000 to adopt smaller animals, and 2,000-3,000 rupees for birds.

“The monthly rates will be one-twelfth of the annual rates. We will upload the animal and shepherd’s photo on the website and also place it near the respective enclosure.”

Since the lifting of COVID-19 restrictions, 25 people have adopted different animals and birds so far and many have shown an interest.

“The adoption process has gained momentum after the lockdown. Animals like hunting cat, hyena, giraffe, chimpanzee have been adopted. I hope more people will come forward.”

The chimpanzee Babu was sometimes adopted by stage character Sohini Sengupta, and an IPS officer from Howrah and a professor at Ashutosh College has adopted two smaller animals.
