Texas Biomed pulls bond funding request amid animal welfare protests

After hearing objections to his animal research, the Texas Institute for Biomedical Research on Thursday withdrew its funding request from the city’s 2022 bond package.

Texas Biomed, located in District 6, originally requested $11 million in bond money to fund infrastructure on its campus. The think tank came up with that number after consulting with city employees, President and CEO Larry Schlesinger said in a letter to Mayor Ron Nirenberg and City Manager Eric Walsh Thursday afternoon.

The Citizens Committee tasked with recommending utility-specific bond projects to the city council approved 16 projects Thursday and maintained the public art commitment at 1.5%, bringing the bond total to $134 million. The projects included municipal utilities and public safety buildings such as the proposed police sub-station in District 3, priced at $19 million.
